photoshop won't help you until you've learned how theme configuration works.
you will need to look into other's themes.
you will need to read many docs (and tutorials eventually, but i don't know if there're some good and up-to-date ones at the moment).

look through the sticky threads in the general forum, you'll find some helpful links there.

http://o-t-s.sourceforge.net/ is very important ressource, especially if you're just starting out.

Also, you will have to look at the module docs in your litestep\modules\docs folder to know what each module youre using does and what it's settings are.

But most importantly (IMO), study other themes. Mess around with them. Look at how they did this and that. That's how I acquired my (not-so-great yet ;)) theming knowledge.

How does photoshop not help?

photoshop distracts you too much, so you end up doing a bad job on the theme. My first theme all I had was a crappy bar, no special GFX (except the wallpaper but I knew how to do it) My first may have been horrible but I put all I knew into the theme, not the graphics.

It does help to know photoshop, but it certainly won't be your main tool.

of course it does help, but the main job you'll have to do is to set up your theme. themes are not graphics, themes are mainly .rc-files and scripts. like a car ... what does it help you paint a nice colour on it, as long as its engine doesn't run? ;)
