I have two problems with Litestep. I had Litestep for around 4 months. The first problem was annoying so I switched back to explorer. Now I'm back to Litestep but there is a new, somewhat major, problem along with the older problem. Here are the two problems with Litestep, which, hopefully, you will help me fix.
1) Internet doesn't work for the first five minutes(~) after startup. I can't use MSIE, Firefox, and none of my other browsers along with AIM etc.
2)Computer won't shutdown. None of the entries work in the shutdown dialog box or [ctrl][alt][del] > shutdown. The only way to shutdown the computer is by manually holding down the button on my tower. Or I can restart by pressing [ctrl][alt][del] two times.
I am running Windows 98SE, and these two problems are valid in all themes. Please help! Thanks in advance.
The Shutdown problem:
If you are using clockwork comment the line ClockWorkAlwaysOnTop
I changed themes and the shutdowm problem fixed itself. I'm still having the internet problem, though.
How do you connect to the internet?
what ls build are you running?
0.24.7 RC1 and I have a cable connection. I can do stuff on the internet right away while in explorer.
see if mprexe.exe is running when you start with LS.
system information-software.
Msgsrv32.exe should call for it to load right away.
in msconfig the only things that startup are:
-TweakUI
-Microsoft Pointer (for my mouse)
-IgfxTray (Intel Display icon in systray)
-ShutDown98 (ini file that makes shutdown automatically selected in the shutdown display regardless of last system shutdown/restart)
-Screen Guard Message scan (comes with Access Denied(security software))
-Screen Guard (see above)
-Keyboard Manger (makes special buttons on my keyboard work)
-Still Image Moniter(? - C:\Windows\System\STIMON.EXE)
-HotKeyCmds (hot key commands?)
-ADSS (Access Denied)
-PersFw (Kerio Personal Firewall)
Again, I'm running Windows 98se.
Ok, look you got a lot of stuff that is really optional as a matter of fact everything you put on that list(except Stimon.exe wich im not sure)what you should have and dont mention are Scanregistry and LoadPowerProfile I run your same os 98se and those are the only 2 things I have on startup.Well its all preference but Im starting to think that one of those guys is creating a conflict.
What I ment on my post was to see whats is actually running, and that you can see on system information-software-running proceceses (or something like that "Im translating").
I don't load Scanreg and LoadPowerProfile because I don't know what LoadPowerProfile is and Scanreg slows system startup.
You mean in the close program dialog?
wow...
there are about 15 rundll32 running. That usually doesnt happen. Here are the rest:
litestep.net - Mozilla Firefox
Aim (buddylist window)
Foobar2000 v.0.8.2
ActiveTask (?)
All of the rundlls (cant make a new line after this, continued in next post.)
Stimon
Hkcmd (?)
Point32
Igfxtray
Launch
Another Rundll32
Msgloop
Msg32
hm... I don't know why but litestep.exe isnt on there. Thanks for your help. I'm going to try a virus scan(rundll thing).
AVG and Ad-Aware turned up nothing.
Go here and run a test (its 100% safe)http://www.pcpitstop.com/pcpitstop/default.asp
read carefully your results (everything).
I have an account with PcPitstop already, and the only thing it says is to install more ram.
i would say uncheck all startup entries that u have ... and see what happens. then check them one by one... see if the problem solves...
It also tells you that 99% of the stuf you got running you dont need (and probably what is used for and a lot more). well I would say follow 143lssteps advise and uncheck those entries, but y would not run without scanreg if I were you.
Edit: you could post a link to your pitstop results.
Internet works in explorer, so I dont think its startup items. I'll try it anyway. I'll do it tomorrow, and will post the results. Thanks for all your help so far.
I desabled all of the startup entries in msconfig, but the problem is still there. I scaned with PcPitStop, I compleatly forgot that I turned off hardware graphics acceleration, and now I can play my games again.

Similar system (yours better)(same OS)This might help.

First I would clean that system somewhat then focus on the internet problem if it remains.
You should only have 1 yellow flag (the Ram one, same as me)
Try to take background programs until you get the cpu load to less than 5%
Defrag drive E
My previous results have that, and the internet problem was existent then. I just need to defrag my new partitions (D:\, E:\, and F:\).
Ok. Try updating to 0.24,7 RC2 or RC3.
RC1 had some 98 bugs that where fixed on RC2.
How do I do that? Build Updater doesnt work.

here:
http://www.litestep.net/download.php?mod=93,module
look this is probably not the right way but it works fine.
1)click on the link and download to a temp folder
2)unzip right there to the temp folder.
3)switch to explorer as the shell
4)replace the litestep.exe and the other dlls with the new ones from the update.
5)switch back to LS as shell.
Edit: if the link dont work Rc3 is right there on the downloads section.
the link works but to a page that says : tux say: only you can prevent forest fires!
The RC3 download : No one has said that it's recommended for windows 9x users. (It has been asked twice)
SUCCESS
I upgraded to RC2. Internet works right away now. Thank you so much for your help.
Come on men, the fixes were made to rc2, rc3 has them,
if you want just upgrade to rc2(your choice)
The link would have worked if ",module" would have been painted blue.
Allright,
Cool,
Mission accomplished.
good luck
I'm sorry, but what does litestep have to do with an internet connection?
LSMail alwaysontop also hoses the shutdown dialog.
