Uninstalled but one remaining problem Thread last updated on 2004-06-22 07:43:19

I like LS but after using it for a few weeks on my P200 notebook (Win98SE) I uninstalled it because the machine struggled and threw up errors now and again. That was several months ago. Ever since then on restarting I end up with an open file explorer window (defaulting to C:\). Although I'm pretty knowledgeable about windows settings I cannot figure out what is opening this window and my last guess is that LS has made some weird registry entry or modified explorer.exe. Any ideas or suggestions appreciated. It's not critical but it is annoying having to close this window every time I switch the thing on. TIA.

I dont think LS changes your registry.
(Try) run-(type) Msconfig-(select) startup, and if the problem is there uncheck the entry.

Thanks for the suggestion but I have checked and rechecked this and other typical places but, after several months, still cannot find what is opening the window. I have scruntinised any and all config files, checked the registry manually as well as using several tools dedicated to editing start-up options, checked the bootlog.txt for any files that may inadvertantly cause the window to open, and checked startup dir for hidden files (which shouldn't be the cause anyway) and everything else I can think of. Hence the post, I'm now convinced that LS has performed some unusual mod somewhere that is not obvious. Maybe LS has set a read-only flag somewhere? Keep the suggestions coming, thanks.

Thats strange,
If its not on:
config.sys
autoexe.bat
systen.ini
win.ini
or startup
I dont know were could it be, I think the startup reflects the run entry on the registry, there is a run once entry there also.
well, good luck.

There are many, many registry keys that programs can be launched from at startup. Autoruns should list (almost?) all of them.

Yep, tried autorun as well. If it helps, the window opened is an explorer window with no tree and has a drive icon, same as a mapped drive (except here its just plain old C drive).

try the following app:
http://www.beyondconvention.net/ohussain/SetShell.zip
when you run it, just select explorer, and it SHOULD set everything back correctly

duece, thanks for the suggestion. Although I ran setshell when I uninstalled LS several months ago, I tried it again just now. The window still opens on boot-up :(
