The current first page of the Theme gallery is absurdly large. It's ridiculous. The 'thumbnails' are nothing but the full size image resized, meaning each 'thumbnail' is the size in bytes of the full image! For example, the current first page of the gallery weighs in at nearly 3 megabytes! 3mb for just one web page is entirely unneeded, especially when it's likely most users only click on one or two of the thumbnails to see the full image. This is completely foolish and lazy web design; it eats up your bandwidth, and it takes a stupid amount of time for many users to load up one page. I am on a 56k connection, and it took around *15 minutes* to download that one gallery page.
The entire point of having a thumbnail page is to have a smaller (not just resized) image that can be downloaded quickly as a preview of the full sized image. There should be a limit on the size in bytes of the thumbnails submitted (30kb is PLENTY), else there is no point in having a thumbnail gallery at all. Some of those images are over 800kb, which for a thumbnail only dozens of pixels wide, is absolutely ludicrous.
you remind me of one of my neighbors. he's really an ass too. have you ever heard the old proverb "you attract more bees with honey than with vinegar"? in other words, if you're polite, you'll get farther. granted, you do have a point, but still...you're just an ass.
Yes well I was sort of wound up at that point due to the insanity of the situation. I formally apologise to anyone who was insulted by reading my first post.
I would edit it, to be honest I can't really think of anything to edit. None of my comments are directed at anyone in particular, I havn't used any insults, and the tone of the whole thing accurately represents how frustrated I was at the time. Which is important because it demonstrates how frustrating the situation could be to other users on slow connections.
Still, I forgive you for calling me an ass.
I completely agree, however an easier solution (one that does not require everyone to re-submit their thumbnails) is to use php to generate the thumbnail if the filesize is >30kb. Numerous scripts like this exists and this should be done asap.
Yes, that would be an excellent solution version91x.
I agree as well... although it is no longer a major problem for me. When I first started frequenting this site I was stuck on a 56k, and the thumbnail size was an annoyance, especially while searching for a specific theme. However, if I knew what I was looking for, I would simply change to the descriptions view mode, and turn the images off (broswer = Opera) to save myself considerable time.
But now, I have cable internet, so, booyeah.
Could you provide a direct link to a thumbnail image that is actually a full sized image? Thanks.
Never mind, we've found the bug causing this to happen. And while I appriciate your frusteration in the matter, it would have been more pleasant to receive a simple notification of the issue which offered a little more detail (like a link to a couple thumbnails which had this problem). Anyway, hopefuly we'll have it fixed soon. Although going back and fixing old images might take a while.
Ok the problem is fixed and all of the large thumbnails have been resized. Please pass on specific links to any further problematic thumbnails you find so we can fix them. Thanks.
