WinXP locks on shutdown screen when using Litestep Thread last updated on 2004-05-29 15:34:06

The shutdown screen, that gives you four buttons:

'Log Off' 'Shutdown' 'Restart'
'Cancel'

Recently this started locking up for me. To get out of it I have to hit control-alt-delete and choose either log off, restart, or shutdown from there. Ever since my last Windows update on my Sony Vaio PCG-R505EL laptop.

It works fine when I switch the shell to explorer. I did the update while in explorer in fact in order to ensure it did a full update.

It also works fine on my main PC, an Athlon, when in either Litestep or explorer.

I updated my Litestep build, I copied over the copy I had on the working machine, I deleted my user account on the laptop and tried a new one, I tried installing Norton Systemworks and looking for registry problems.

So far I've come up empty. I've searched these forums (using the term 'shutdown') and the litestep documentation and come up empty as well.

Anyone ever seen anything like this?

Has no one else seen this?

It's spread to a second computer I have after that machine did it's last windows update.

On this laptop I even trying a system restore to take me back before the windows update, but it failed.

I had success for a day or two by deleting my litestep directory and copying over a copy from the other machine, but after the second shutdown the problem resumed...

I believed I've solved the issue. So I'll post it here for later people searching on the same problem.

I was using vwm2.dll, and that seems to be in conflict with either XP, or one of these other modules I used:

*NetLoadModule desktop2-2.0
*NetLoadModule popup2-2.1.1
*NetLoadModule systray2-2.0.1
*NetLoadModule label-1.99
*NetLoadModule tasks-0.92-b3

;*NetLoadModule ckvwm-1.40
*NetLoadModule RabidVWM.dll
;*NetLoadModule vwm2.dll
*NetLoadModule lsxcommand-1.8.5
*NetLoadModule lswchanger.dll

*NetLoadModule dynamp-0.50
*NetLoadModule lsfonts-0.1
*NetLoadModule lsbox-2.95
*NetLoadModule mzscript-0.8.6l
*NetLoadModule textedit-2.4l-13

As you can see, I switched to RabidVWM and the problem was solved.

Before doing so I tried adjusting all of the settings for vwm2.dll that I had, and I got it to shutdown normally once, but then the issue resumed - so I gave up. I didn't want to use RabidVWM at first because it would automatically switch desktops on me every time I moved a window too far in one direction or another...

I read it's docs and could not figure out what setting was doing that, so I set everything in the theme I had had that problem to to false if it was true, and true if it was false... Now I'm going through and seeing what I can switch back without causing that auto desktop change to resume...

Nothing in it's docs mentions such a 'feature', though I suspect it's connected to one of the focus things...

:: Forums :- Modules :- VWMAutoSwitch=false for rabidVWM
"Is there any way to stop rabidVWM from switching desktops when you drag a window to the edge?"
"Are you using rabidvwm-1.1.1? This could be related to a bug in VWMSwitchOnAnyFocus that was fixed in 1.1.1."

Also, should be:
*NetLoadModule rabidvwm-1.1.1
and probably:
*NetLoadModule lswchanger-1.2
