ls consuming cpu while connected to internet Thread last updated on 2004-06-09 07:52:35

if i am connected to the internet and the firewall (kerio) isn't set to block all traffic, i have a cpu usage of ~6% constantly, while it's 0% most of the time else. this is only the value for a theme i'm working on, but i've verified it's the same with other themes, only that the % value differs...

maybe it is related to xlabel, as for example austerity doesn't show this behaviour.

ah, i'm on RC2 btw.

edit: ok, i've found out that the problem is related to vtray which obviously has problems with the animated icon of kerio firewall. in this particular case, vtray is hooked to a xlabel. i'll do some more research tomorrow.

now this thread has become a bit displaced ;)

Does systray2 show the same behavior?

ok, so now i've tested with systray2, it's the same.
cpu usage is typically between 2 and 7 percent, with peaks of over 10%...

Hurm... what if you load no systray module at all? If it still happens, add
LSTrayService FALSE
to your step.rc and restart litestep.exe (recycle won't be enough in that case). Post back here with the results. That should help us track down the culprit.

testing will take some time, since i've smashed up my theme so that it doesn't really work at all at the moment... :D

ok, just tested again with a somehow working theme without any script lookups or anything...

i can really track it down to this:
- tray module hooked to xlabel (i didn't try hooking to skinbox or lsbox, as these have already been in use a long time)
- "animated icon" of kerio firewall switched on (version is pretty old, from 2002; as soon as i will update - which will be some time between now and 2015)

in every other case (including the options you suggested) it works absolutely fine, ls is at 0% then.

Ok, thanks. That means that there's not much we can do in the core - it's something for the module authors to fix.

oops, somehow forgot about this... :)
should i email the authors (and if so, who's the one for systray2)?

I guess systray2 doesn't currently have a maintainter - you could try posting on the LSML.

I'll tell you this: that animated tray icon is the worst possible feature... (I use the same version of kerio, I am sure of it)

Just using explorer as a shell, it used 15-20% of my 1Ghz epia board, which is roughly equivalent to your drain. (Add about 2-3% overhead for any systray module)

Do not use the animated icon of kerio. If you want something animated, use something like NetStat, samurize, etc.

Hope this helps

wow, finally someone to verify this. thank you. :)

i just switched off the animated icon as well. to me, there's not really any use for it (except for catching your attention senselessly while you're trying to concentrate ;) ).
