Try reinstalling directX and getting the newest drivers from Realtek (I take it it's either a cheap card or onboard audio). Odd problem, and I've yet to have any issues, having used several boards w/ Realtek codecs on them (AL650 right now).

Does the driver have a program it usualy starts up by any chance? I've noticed sometimes my ATi and Philips stuff won't start up, sometimes they will. I've never had issues w/ Realtek, but back when I was trying various shells, many had trouble with the C-Media driver, as it had a mixer app that had to start for any sound to work (Aston and LS were the only shells it worked fine with).
