I have notice that eversince using litestep when I open eg my computer or my documents folder any folder that uses explorer to broswe the files I notice momets after the explorer window is open it refreshes itself, why? and can I stop it.
oh secondly can someone gimme the !execute command to set explorer as shell and litestep as shell so I can put in my popup.rc
Thanks
On mine it seems that explorer puts in a 2 second delay before refreshing the GUI. you will create a new file, delete, copy, or paste a new file and it takes 1 to 2 seconds for Explorer to update, even though it physically performed the action instantly.
I haven't found a way around this and 3rd party file explorers are trash, IMO.
IN fact that is not what I meant its not the case......I am using window fx adds shadows to your windows and its the shadow that refreshes I don't think I have an explorer problem
but in your case its either not enough ram, slow ram or slow cpu............your problem is definetly hardware performance related........ because remmber explorer is being run as a seperate process......don't believe me play music and drag any explorer window real fast( shaking it for a sec) see what happenes to you music, restart with explorer as shell and you'll notice that your music isn't affected.
2.8ghz P4, 512 megs RAM... the problem is NOT my hardware.
what kind of ram? if not sd hmmmmmmmm you must have lots of processes running..........how many processes do you have running? but remember take a not of your commit charge
PC-1066 RDRAM giving me 3.8gig/sec bandwidth. it is in NO WAY any part of my hardware. it is a software problem somewhere.
I have 15 processes running... hardly fills half of the Task Manager window. I'm very keen on tweaking so all the useless services are off.
hey I am an rdram user too....lol a dying breed.
well vegetto you might have disableed some services that you might need 15 is prety low, try enabling enable all and see if you still get a slow explorer refresh if you still get it then go ahead a redisable them but sometimes disabling certain services WILL give you performance drawbacks trust me I have been there..just give it a try with all your services back on
Nobody really knows what explorer does or why outside of Microsoft. I haven't seen explorer refresh as soon as it's openend, but the 1-2 second delay is especially annoying when you want to rename two or three files in a row. Somehow I think there was a halfway rational explanation for this, but I don't remember it atm. It has nothing to do with hardware or CPU load though.
As for setting explorer as shell from a popup: See the documentation for SetShell if you used Omar's installer. (specifically the sections "COMMAND LINE OPERATION" and "MISC")
lol why did I not see that.......thanks once again rabid you da man
After going back to Explorer as my shell it did not have a delay anymore. Returning to Litestep I got the nasty delay again.
It happens. I get the delay, but have gotten used to it, and worked around it when possible (IE, saving to a new directory so you don't have to make it and name it, each taking 2-3 seconds). I know it's not a hardware thing, and I have a much slower PC than you do (1.73Ghz Athlon, 512MB PC3200, NF2). Thing is, I just can't go back...no VWM, all that screen space eaten up by a taskbar, that cluttered desktop...ew :).
I'll have to try the popup setshell thingie.
