lost windows functions Thread last updated on 2004-03-23 03:44:15

Ever since I loaded LS, I can’t right click on a folder and click “Search”. I have to click the search button at the top of my browser and then specify where I want it to search manually.

Also after I download a file, I can’t click “Open Folder” anymore.

Other than that, I’m in love with LS. But can anyone help me with my only two problems?

Thanks,
Jonboy

i believe those are functions that are integrated into explorer and thus cannot be done in ls.

I was thinking he wanted a stand alone app or module.
Find.exe is the closest I could think of...

The "Open Folder" issue with I.E. running in Litestep is something that I would love to see fixed if possible. Or would it have to be replaced by a module? I'd think it a core windows component and not one based on the shell. Then agian, it's windows, nothing is ever that simple. :(

btw, why are so many people still using i.e.?? there're so many better alternatives.

some people like IE. it's their prerogative.

Mear|in: As long as no one knows how that button works even a module won't be able to replace it. There appears to be no documentation whatsoever. We do not know what the button does, which API(s) it calls, etc. It must be some Explorer function that LS doesn't implement, but we have no clue what it is.

And it's hard to write a module that offers this functionality if you don't know what to write or how to expose it to IE. ;) Sure I could write a module that (given a path) opens a folder window. But how do you get IE to use that module?

If you just can't live without all that, you can run LiteStep on top of Explorer. It will suck, since you can't quite do all of LiteStep's fun tricks, but you can do it.

Ilmcuts: I figured so, but thanks for the the clarification. In fact, now that you mention it, I belive this was discussed before. I've lowwered myself to rehashing an old topic!
/me puts on the n00b hat and sits in the corner.

I believe the other topic was about the "find target" button. That bug may have the same cause, but who can tell? :\

I had no idea that I would get so many responces. Question for RabicCow though, what is the difference between running SL on top of Explorer as apposed to replacing it? When I start up my computer, LS starts up as my GUI, I can change back to Explorer, but I have to reboot into it. If I run LS ontop of explorer, an I booting Explorer and then loading LS ontop of it, and then it is also I can unload w/o having to reboot? Is that the difference?

If you want to run LS on top of explorer, you leave Explorer set as shell, then run LiteStep.exe as a regular application. (may need -nostartup on win9x) Then you can close LS with ctrl-alt-f1 or !quit, and explorer will still be running.

You will probably want to turn off LS's "another shell is already running" warning (don't rembember the setting offhand), and you might want to modify the theme to not load a desktop module. (and other things might not get along well with explorer... I guarantee testing is thin here.)
