hi. i am using the default theme. edited everything the way i wanted. the only thing i dont know how to change is transparency for the start/popup menu thing. is this an option at all? if so, what files do i need to edit and how?

I don't think the default theme came with transparency by default and it would be something you would have to add. Transparency is flakey at best for most machines and doesn't run at all on 9x machines so he had good reason for leaving it out. You want to read up on grdTransparent or grdMagick to add transparent effects to your theme. Good Luck

lstransparent works on 9x... but it's quite slow. On 2k/XP you should go with grdtransparent or grdMagik, as DeV said.
