Greets. This is a post directed solely towards technically savvy folks - if you don't know the difference between a kernel and a shell you can stop right here :)

The latest release of WinPE (at the time of this writing anyhow) features a new addition to the default WinPE arsenal - the ability to use GeoShell as your shell.

That's fine and dandy for GeoShell users, but what about us LiteSteppers?

I'm wondering if any tech-heads out there know of a really simple way of setting up a PE kernel with a LiteStep shell?

(In case you're a techie and don't know what WinPE is, it's basically a totally stripped-down version of the win2000/xp/2003 kernel, without all the bogus XP-Home crap that bogs down your svchost with services you'll never have any use for. Also it creates the system as a .ISO so you have a CD that boots to a Win32 GUI environment - basically a 2003 version of a DOS boot-floppy)

id say look at how they set up geoshell... if its just a matter of including the files in the iso and changing the shell line in the registry, i dont see why you wouldnt be able to just replace that with litestep.

Hmmmm probably right :)

youd probably have to store the themes somewhere else though, since most themes modify their config files with mzscript/textedit, which would be quite difficult on a cd(:

you could do this fairly easily by changing these lines:
ModulesDir "$LiteStepDir$modules\"
PersonalDir "$LiteStepDir$profiles\$UserName$\personal\"
ThemesDir "$LiteStepDir$profiles\$UserName$\themes\"

to point to somewhere on the hard drive, rather than to somewhere in $litestepdir$.

actually winPE creates a ramdisk with a Documents and Settings folder on it specifically for programs that write to config files..

Does WinPE sound support is back ?

well, if it creates that folder on a ram disk, all the changes you make to the theme wont be saved on reboot...

Smurth - that question doesn't make sense.. but if you're asking if WinPE has audio support - not that I can tell.

doy - that's right.
