all icons not showing in systray Thread last updated on 2004-01-14 17:00:58

I got a bit of an anoyance here with all litestep themes that I have tried. A good portion of my systray icons are not visible, such as my icq.I have to relaunch ocq everytime I want access to my contacts list. Another problem is austerity theme cuts off the systray when I have more than 4 tasks running in the task tray. Is there a solution so I can get my full systray back?

open task manager, and if there is a process called trayserver.exe, kill it. also, run msconfig and disable it from in there if it is there

if that doesnt fix the austerity problem, make sure scripting is enabled in the themevars.rc

regedit. :p
Seriously though, go to http://www.sysinternals.com and get AutoRuns. It can't disable autostart items directly, but if you select "jump to" in the rightclick menu it'll open regedit with the registry key you need to modify.

well, trayserver.exe isn't running. Maybe it's just a litestep limitation in regards to some applications that use the tray? For fun I loaded powermenu.exe and used it to minimize a folder to the systray, I could not reopen the folder but at least the icon was showing. No big deal, I have a hotkey now to reload icq when I need the contacts list.

another question, how do I get my "start" key to load the menu?

are you looking at the list of running applications or the list of running processes? because i cant think of any reason other than trayserver that would make most systray icons not appear... could you list which programs wont show up in systray?

your windows key should automatically call the popup menu when you press it by itself, but ive had problems with that too... check your personal.rc to make sure these tso lines are in there:
jKeyLWinKey "!Popup"
jKeyRWinKey "!PopupTheme"

the newest version of the installer puts them there, im not sure about earlier versions though.

Thanks :) I was looking at the running processes. Funny thing I was reading up a bit on popups last night and managed to get the windows key doing what it does best :) Was also having fun customizing the interface graphics a bit too, man I wish explorer.exe was so easy to modify. Right now it just seems to be the icq button that won't appear in the systray that I know of, I'll switch back to explorer later to see if there was others not showing up. I'll let ya know then.

Do you still have Explorer as your shell and then running Litestep after you go into your computer normally? If you start your computer normally and then run litestep.exe then that could also be your problem. Aside from traysaver.exe, that is the only other thing I can think of that would cause the problem.

The computer boots with the litestep shell.

I had the same problem with the tray icons, after I had just installed DesktopX in another XP user account. Uninstalled DesktopX, the problem remained. Then I read this thread, and looked through my processes, and sure enough, there was trayserver. Anyways, I disabled it with Starter, http://codestuff.netfirms.com/features.shtml , a great freeware utility that shows a complete list of everything loading at startup, and allows you to disable them with a single click. Everything is good now. thanks for your help, guys. :D

just look in hkey_current_user\software\microsoft\windows\current version\run. if you see anything in there named trayserver or trayserve, whack it.

I am new to LS and so far I love it!! But this tray icon issue is bugging me too. I definitely have no trayserver. Typically I have 15 or 16 icons in the tray (in two row). Periodically one or two disappear, always leaving 8 (or less). If I recycle the theme (YF-19 ?)the tray expands and the icons re-appear.

Which icons disappear? Always the same ones?

wrobert: The problem with traysaver and trayserver is that they get installed without you knowing. They are part of the Object Desktop package from Stardock and really get in the way.

Doesn't vTray have some sort of autohide icons capability, like XP? Maybe the theme is simply just hiding icons that haven't been used recently or something. I trully don't know, I'm not familiar enough with vTray, but it is a guess.

nope. or, if it does, it's not documented. you can hide specified icons, but it won't hide anything automatically.

It is documented for VTray, and yes, it will hide icons automatically after a specified delay in minutes.
