Anyone know if there's a way to call the ms Find Files dialog through a command-line?
not from within litestep, as the find files dialog is a part of explorer... external programs like
this one can be used in pretty much the same way though
by the way... could we make this a sticky or something?
Heyyyyy that's perfect, outclasses explorer's find, and it's nice and light. Now here's a question: If I include find.exe in my theme's miscdir would that be a violation of international OTS law, punishable by testicular electro-shock? Or could I get away with that? :)
Also there's no docs associated with the Find.exe zip, do you what the licensing deal is with that?
i dont think thats a problem, if i remember correctly, omar even did this with some of his themes at one point, im not sure if he still does though.
i have no idea about the licensing, i dont even know where rootrider got it from(:
I never included find.exe in any of my themes. :P I did include sysmeter.exe in some of them though, because my themes actually depended on sysmeter since it was used to display system stats.
Putting find.exe in MiscDir is not something that's disallowed under the OTS, but this seems like a matter of personal user preference, i don't think a theme could possibly depend on find.exe for anything. It would be better to setup find.exe in PersonalDir somewhere so that it's accessible to you everywhere.
Licensing (for distribution) may be an issue, i'm pretty sure this utility was shipped with PowerDesk or something like that. It's several years old though and I doubt they care, but you never know. ;) Never stopped anyone in the past. ;)
didnt e-sushi make an utility just to search files some time ago?
There's lsfind.dll (which doesn't include any documentation or clues as to how to use it, not even source) and there's find.dll which adds a few bangs like !FindFiles, which only work in w98 ;)
sryo: findfiles.exe
i think its a quite okay alternative to find.exe
whoah.
now that's a powerful find files utility, love the regex. :)
omar: hmmm... so you didnt include find.exe, but are you sure you didnt include findfiles.exe? because its sitting in the modules dir of my chaos theme installation from about a year ago, and i dont know why i would have put it in there(:
now.. if I were to include the find.exe file (which technically only bears a copyright until '98) which is not under public license as far as I know, it would be potentially opening up my ass for copyright infringement or something.. That I'm not too worried about, but would I be making any enemies out of ls.net admins or anything *serious* like that? ;)
Technically that would bear a copyright until '98 + some ungodly length of time, at least 70 years.
doy: Yes, i'm sure. :P
This is not something I ever would have done consciously. Having said that, I also doubt I could have allowed the file in, even unintentionally, since I've never used find.exe or findfiles.exe etc.
As far as I can recall, there's nothing in chaos that links to a find files utility and in any case as I stated earlier, I don't think including utilities like this with themes is a good or sensible idea at all. This isn't a new position for me. ;)
If one wishes to use find.exe, it's best to put it somewhere in the PersonalDir hierarchy so it's accessible in all themes, rather than including a copy of it in each theme.
omar: odd... oh well(:
inhaler: if you are that worried about it, i would use findfiles.exe, although like omar said, its not really a part of a theme... it is possibly something that should be included with the litestep installer though, so we dont have people installing litestep and wondering why they cant get to their find files dialog... just put a $find$ evar in evars.rc or something pointing to findfiles.exe in the personal folder, just as a default
I personally have never understood where this problem originates. Back when people ran 95 it was a problem but ever since then I have never had a problem with the Find Dialog.
