The best way to learn how to make a theme is that you read the module docs. Of course, grap a simple theme and try to change something, like positions, colors, fonts, than you can add more features like, rainmeter, another vwm and so on, and.... asking advanced themer questions *g*

It's a tiny bit outdated now that we have OTS2, but one of the best (if not the best) LS tutorials can be found here. It's a general LS tutorial rather than a specific theme-making tutorial though. But it'll help anyway. You should also check the "tutorials" sticky thread.
