Win98SE Austerity rtclick popup tasks crash Thread last updated on 2003-10-23 05:35:27

I'm running Win98SE on an old Celeron 333 MHz laptop. I just installed Litestep and am currently using the Austerity theme that comes with it. So far the only thing I changed was to disable the taskbar.

Litestep crashes when I do the following:
1. Right click on desktop to get popup menu
2. Move cursor to the Tasks menu item
3. Right click on one of the tasks listed in the popup submenu

I searched the General forum for "right tasks crash" and didn't find any references to this problem. I read only the messages that looked potentially relevant, though.

I also read the FAQ pointed to in one of the sticky messages. It doesn't appear to be there either.

Downloaded and installed newest stable Indiestep build. Problem persists.

uh, well, that could be why. the "newest stable indiestep" build is about 8 months old, and pre 0.24.7(the version you're running now). uninstall litestep, then re-install. if it still crashes after that, then let us know the error you get.

What I meant by "Problem persists" is that the problem was happening with 0.24.7 -- before I installed the Indiestep build -- and continued to happen after said installation.

I followed your suggestion since I do want the newer of the two versions. This is the error I get:

LITESTEP caused an invalid page fault in

Someone called ilmcuts emailed me a new popup2.dll. I installed it and rebooted to find no change in behavior.

sorry about that. I actually thought that's what you meant, but after doing helpdesk for over 5 years, I've learned not to believe everything people say (sorry!).

hmm...now, will litestep crash doing any of those three items, or only when you do all three in that order? if it only happens when you do all three, then you may want to configure austerity to use a different tasks module, see if that helps.

It's okay, deuce. You went through *five* *years* of helpdesk? You have my deepest sympathy.

Litestep crashes only when I do all three in that order. Also, it doesn't matter whether I get the popup from the desktop or from the Litestep logo button on the taskbar (the button on the taskbar that appears to be Austerity's analog to Explorer's "Start" button). I will try a different tasks module as you suggest and post the result.

Never mind. Call me lame, but I'm giving up on Litestep. It's a good effort but it's not what I'm looking for.
