Multi-monitor & Crashing on install Thread last updated on 2003-09-26 13:36:30

i've got a winxp pro box running 3 monitors:1@1024x768 and 2@1280x1024. i've got a new nVidia gForce FX 5600 and logitech mouse and keyboard(not sure if that will make a difference, but i saw problems about it in earlier posts). my main problem is that the install won't complete without rebooting the computer halfway through. It installs some of the shell, but not all of it and i get mixed results. i went through and turned everything off that I could find but still no go.

i haven't heard of this problem before. what is your third monitor? what installer and version are you using? have you tried installing in safe mode?

this was a bug in v2.7 of the installer, it's fixed in v2.7.1.

sorry 'bout that. :P

hey omar, shouldn't the setshell links in the programs menu have a confirmation dialog? i just used the set explorer as shell thinking it just changed the registry and nothing else, and my pc rebooted, it closed the webpages i was visiting, the bittorrent files i was downloading....

Yeah, or a warning ;>

Thanks, I'll see if the installer was an older version, and if that doesn't work I'll try safe mode. Has anyone had many problems with actually using LiteStep with more than 1 monitor, and if so, what'm I looking for?

the only real problem is that not all themes are designed for multi-monitor systems. you may (and probably will)have to do some tweaking on quite a few of the themes you download.

there was another reboot bug in the installer (unbelievable, can't believe i missed it) which has now been fixed.

RabidCow & sryo, I've updated SetShell so that it prompts before rebooting. (Should've just done as RabidCow suggested originally, would've saved me some time ;)

You can download SetShell on its own here: http://beyondconvention.net/ohussain/SetShell.zip

but if you're using my litestep installer, you better download the lateset version to kill what is hopefully the last reboot bug.

afaik, multiple monitors should not cause litestep to crash. It'll cause almost all themes to be horribly mutilated until you fix its coordinates (depending on monitor orientation), but it should still work.

K, I was using the old installer, got the new one and it installed without a hitch. Thanks :]

The theme I'm using, ILG, has a floating taskbar setting, which works fine in itself, so orientation seems to be just dandy, in case anyone is going to be designing themes for multimonitors. However LiteStep stops responding after about 10 minutes, and the machine can't refresh the screen if I move or shut down a program. It unloads it from memory, just not visually. i've seen on 2 occasions that nVidia Twin View crashed when I went to log off or reboot. Anybody seen this on new nVidia drivers?

Also, I've disabled all the desktop managers that come with nVidia, have yet to find a Twin View setting in it.
