What happened to the build Step.rc??? Thread last updated on 2003-11-14 22:13:07

I don't mean to rant and rave about this, but I will a little anyway. A couple of years ago when I downloaded a LiteStep build, it had an example Step.rc which was very enlightening and got me up and running by example.

Now the indies aren't putting a Step.rc in their builds and I can't find one to download. Having lost or overwritten my old Step.rc and majorly forgotten how it works, it seems that my choice is to read /all/ the documentation and write one from scratch. I don't like this one bit. I am resorting to an installer in hopes that it will at least write me a basic Step.rc that will get Litestep up and running.

On top of all that, I hear that the Darkstep development has stopped for good. For some reason I liked the idea of DarkStep but I never got to use it since the latest build has problems with win98se. Anyway, I digress.

I think all users new to Litestep deserve the roadmap of the Step.rc, and I would really hope the indies start including one, even if everything is commented out. Consider it part of the documentation.

download the installer, or check the indie cvs, i think there's a step.rc there.

Download a theme...get an example step.rc...I don't see how hard it is? You downloaded a build...not a distribution...builds should only contain the core LiteStep install, no modules...no config...no nothin!

Got the Step.rc from indie CVS. No problem once I knew where to look. I would consider Step.rc part of the core components, because without it Litestep just sits there and looks... blank.

it may be a core component but it is not part of a build...it is part of a distribution.

well, there is A step.rc that comes with (I believe) all builds), that goes in x:\litestep, but that just acts as a pointer to your current themes step.rc. or does even that not come with the build?

deuce: currently every theme comes with a step.rc, but with ots2,themes will come with a theme.rc, there will be only 1 step.rc that is the main one, the loader of the rest.

builds are builds...or binary versions of the current source. Builds do not contain anything except for those binary files required by LiteStep. No Modules...No Step...No Nothing...

litestep will not install without step.rc, for ppl new to it that just want to install a theme and go to sleep without staying up all nite learning how to use a new program,(like me), it should be included in the module download. i have skool people.

erm, pardon me, but the step.rc thats in the litestep directory should just reference the themes step.rc. if you want an example step.rc, download a theme and look at its step.rc.

vertigoalopolus: you came some years late to the discussion, this is about the pre-distro step.rc, when themes came with the ls build.

god i hated those days.

great for a newbie, but for someone who just wanted to try other people's themes, it meant having (most of the time) several litestep directories, and picking a new theme usually meant logging off and choosing a new 'shell' with a switcher like shellOn

aah, memories :}

yeah, but i was a newbie, and didnt know any english back in those days. i got lowspirit's lowdimension theme and been loving litestep since then.
