means LS didn't get installed right...fix it by doing the instructions manually.

NT/2K/XP: LINK
9x/ME: edit system.ini shell=C:\LiteStep\litestep.exe

if LS didn't start as your shell you will have a problem with your system tray. you will also have the same problem if you installed DesktopX at any point, whether it is uninstalled or not.

i never had desktopx and LS doesnt start as my shell i have to edit the system.ini file every time i want to go on LS

Posted by member 1 on 2003-07-27 19:48:01 link

editing system.ini after you boot won't do anything so I really don't understand what you are saying...

Posted by member 52047 on 2003-07-27 20:00:45 link

whenever i restart and come on the computer it always loads regular windows instead of LS.. but in order to go on LS i have to edit the system.ini and put in C:\Litestep\litestep.exe in order for litestep to work properly

What if you saved the system.ini and then put it as read only so that explorer couldnt change it. Worth a try i guess or you could reinstall.

Posted by member 52047 on 2003-07-27 22:07:45 link

maybe i have tried to save it.. but i havent tried it as a read only.

something is setting it back...explorer sure doesn't...nor does LS. something skrewy is going on with that machine...make sure you don't have multiple shell entries or something stupid like that.

wait, you've "tried to save it"? is it not letting you save it?

Posted by member 39367 on 2003-07-28 11:01:02 link

That would be funny if he had never saved the system.ini

Edit: Well he would have had to save it to switch to ls in the first place, so he IS saving it.

the only shell i have is LS

Posted by member 94 on 2003-07-28 15:09:38 link

It will be a lot easier if you have a shell manager (like shellon) installed on your system...

Posted by member 52047 on 2003-07-29 11:12:35 link

i just tried shell on but i still had to edit system.ini and put in C:\litestep\litestep.exe. in for LS to work properly and even then sometimes i get a warning when im on LS that it could not register the win key

-open c:\windows\system.ini in notepad and edit the shell line, so it points to wherever your litestep.exe is located:
shell=c:\path\to\litestep.exe

-save the system.ini file. (do it from the file menu, ctrl+s does not work.)
-do not attempt to start litestep! restart your computer, and it should load automatically.

could i have a trojan thats messing it up???

Posted by member 39367 on 2003-07-29 22:39:14 link

i would think that a trojan would probably change it away from explorer.exe and not TO explorer, lol. Anyone have a clue of what this could be....

UNINSTALL---THEN INSTALL AGAIN, $hit happens!! somethign might have gone wrong in install

Posted by member 39367 on 2003-07-31 17:17:06 link

Hes on 9x, all he should have to do is edit system.ini, its not like the reg keys got messed up because theres none to mess up, not much "$hit" can happen to a system.ini edit.
