[noir].. cant figure out it's email options Thread last updated on 2003-12-01 09:41:12

every time i start up windows xp (pro), 5 or 6 errors come up when i login to my account with the noir shell/theme whatever setup. (im a newb :) these errors are related to the email feature. says all these pop variables or whatever are incorrect or something. i have looked all over, and havent been able to find a way to edit them.

also, i cant get my winamp thing to work either. when i play a mp3 or something winamp related, it just opens up in winamp and not in the top bar. the only thing i can control with noir is the volume.

and 1 question. is it normal for windows to take twice as long to login to my account now that i have installed litestep? not that i care. but im on a pretty hefty system..

anyways, thanks in advance

1) look in the step.rc. there may be extra config files, so if there are, look there too.

2) are you using winamp3?

3) read the forums. this question has been answered MANY times.

Unfortunately the search engine on this site isn't the best and the fact that most thread titles are "I'm new, please help" means it's almost impossible to find information discussed previously.

So I'll give you the gist of it. If you want to speed up when you log on you will need to change XP to use the classic style logon. Else you can press Ctrl+Alt+Del whilst it's logging on and this seems to make LS appear more quickly. There is no fix for this bug.

You have to read the theme's readme. Why else would the file have that name? The email stuff is explained there.

and for the winamp stuff, the module the theme's author used probably doesn't support winamp3 (most don't). so, either go back to winamp2, or download and integrate a module that DOES support winamp3, or just deal without it.

is there any particular reason why winamp3 is usually not supported? do most music people simply like winamp2 better?

It's because wa3 is a PITA to support.

Posted by member 51617 on 2003-07-25 18:46:48 link

is it really that different from wa2?

actually it is

yeah, like taking 10 times longer to start ..

except for those funky skins there is no reason to use winamp3 ... but that may be just me (and millions of others)

probably gonna start a flame war here, but oh well. wa3 sucks. it's a resource hog, and the only upside of it are the cool eye-candy skins. it's an mp3 player. the wa2 skins are just fine for that. especially with litestep, when most themes have controls built in, so you almost never actually see winamp. I tried wa3 for a month, but it was just too much of a hog. besides, wimamp discontinued wa3, so even they realized it's not that popular.

actually theres a winamp 5 beta around (yes it is five, there's no winamp four) which uses winamp 2 engine plus some plugins that bring some winamp 3 functionality (like freeform skins).... so, i guess thats the way to go if you like skins.....

Posted by member 1316 on 2003-12-01 09:41:12 link

and supposedly (I believe dr worm mentioned it first), most winamp2 plugins also work with winamp5, so that may be a way to go if you need to have winamp3 skins (the only real reason to run 3 instead of 2).
