litestep on win2k (read the docs, faq, etc. still... *sigh*) Thread last updated on 2003-07-10 11:38:08

goal: get LS to work on Win2k
description of problem: windows gives me a "very descriptive" error message (litestep.exe cause error, blah, error will be logged, something useless) whenver litestep.exe has been run...

background:
comp #1-toshiba laptop, something old, Win2k Mandarin Chinese, NTFS, shellon v 2.32, geoshell (well, LS didn't work so needs to settle for something else while trying to make it work)
attempts:
disable virus scan, close all other programs, did the windows registry thingy (apparently there are several different versions of this, but did everything as looked up except to fit shellon in the picture)

comp#2-desktop, AMD, Debian Woody/Win98 Mandarin Chinese/Win2k Mandarin Chinese boot, shellon v 2.32
attempts:
(same as above)
geoshell the problem? apparently not...
note: works on 98, not 2k

comp#3-desktop, Win98 Mandarin Chinese/Win2k Mandarin Chinese boot
attempts:
(same as above)
shellon not the problem either...
note: works on 98, not 2k

BTW, the same error messages for all of them... Is this a MS version compatiability problem? (US Eng. vs Mandarin Chinese)
Any suggestions? I plan to try on XP in the "near future" but...

after reading all of this I only know 1 thing...that LS doesn't work on your machine in Windows 2K. How about telling us a little more...like what happenes when it boots up. does it go straight to the GPF or does LS start to try and load? have you attempted unloading all modules per basic troubleshooting proceesdures to see if it is module specific? More importantly, what version of LS are you running and what is its compile date!?

I've attempted several methods to install litestep, using omar's Installer 2.1, or using it and then immediately overwrite it by extracting Indiestep ILS-2003-02-09.zip, the one on the indiestep site (I followed it from sourceforge, and a lot of other links point there as well). When run as as a boot (after selected from ShellOn or directly setting it as shell by editing registy), the system tries to load it for like ten seconds then the error pops up. Then only the wallpaper is there and I need to Ctr-Alt-Del and logout (logout was usually slow, probably takes like 3 minutes). When ran as a program on top of explorer, a similar thing occurs, load for about ten seconds and then the error message (on a lighter note, at least no screen of death...)

Apparently this is a "rare" occurance since I've tried litestep earlier this year (with the same thing happening), then put it off after winterbreak, then now summer and back trying to fix it.
It works on my 98 and XP (just tried it), so I don't think the modules have any problems (I selected the default Simplicity theme and they work).
In any case, thanks for the help. In the mean time I'll try to familarize myself with litestep on my XP.

I'm having the same problem. litestep works fine on my WIN2K desktop but installing using the same indie build on my laptop is failing with a memory exception error (litestep.exe first then rundll32.exe next..)I'm not sure what the solution is yet but it doesn't have anything to do with chinese
