Folder icons Thread last updated on 2003-02-11 17:51:56

Hello! I'm new here, and happy LS user since 2 weeks. I'm not very familiar with LS structure, so please help me - how can I change default folder icon ? Every other system icon is displayed properly, but folder icons are always native-windows-looking. I use LS Indie latest build with Lapis lazuli theme, and iconphile for icon changes. Thank you for any help!

I suppose you're using XP... it's a known bug in XP itself, there seems to be nothing we can do about it from the "outside" without knowing windows' sourcecode. If there is a workaround no one has found it yet afaik.

ResHacker is what you need :)

the same problem in win2k, i'm afraid. [moshi]: with reshacker you can hack shell32.dll (and i did) but htf can we replace the protected shell32.dll in $windir$??? any good tutorial on this would be most welcome...

heh... seems that another great Bill G. achievement .. ;)

But when not using LS (I mean when I turn it off, I use it all the time) there are folder icons which I want. So only with LS there is such a situation...

thx!

in XP (no service pack) you have to replace it in two different folders. $windir$system32/ and $windir$system32/dllcache/ (second should be first) . when windows says you can not replace the file, rename the original file (shell32.old or so) and then paste your altered version into that folder. then windows file protection asks you to put your XP cd in the cd drive. choose cancel. then it asks you if you want to work with the unauthorized files. choose yes. then reboot and it should work.

you can also replace the files with the commandline. here are some tutorials on how to do this: http://www.neowin.net/forum/index.php?act=ST&f=34&t=44566

personally i replace the files from Linux. i have a dual boot system here. XP needs to be on a FAT32 formatted drive for that.

two very important tips: ALWAYS make backups. do not touch important system files with ResBuild from TGTSoft (it fubars everything), use ResHacker instead.

oduck: not only LiteStep, this happens with all shell replacements.

i´d say yes. but make sure you replace all shell32.dll files on your computer. there might be a third one as well. just do a search before replacing :)
