I installed LiteStep this morning and im very impressed with it. Im using a 700mhz pc with XP and every time i restart it comes up with a blank background. I can start the simplicity skin using ctrl-alt-del and beggining the litestep skin selector as a new task and it works fine after that but im wondering what is wrong? Thanks for any advice... Chris

Probably a problem during installation with the registry. It seems that litestep is not selected as being your shell. How did you install it? Did you use an installer? These are supposed to put the right keys at the right spot. If you modified your registry manually I would recommend checking that first. If you feel comfortable with doing it the low level way then set the value of:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Shell

to:

C:\LiteStep\litestep.exe (or wherever litestep.exe is)

If you don't undestand this then I'd recommend resinstalling Litestep with the installer at

Yeah, i used the installer and then edited the registry to make sure! Its not that explorer is loading its just that litestep isnt... The litestep exe file is running on startup but i have to change the skin to simplicity to get any shortcuts etc>..?

Ah if "litestep.exe" is running when you do CTRL-ALT-DEL after startup then it might just be a matter of putting the right step.rc at the right place :)
I would recommend that you:
1. Download the latest indie distribution (the nightly build can't be accessed apparently right now http://shellfront.org is down...) at http://indiestep.sourceforge.net/dl/ILS-2003-02-09.zip
2. Make sure that "C:\Litestep\step.rc" contains something like:

rcStep "step.rc"; Added by LSTS
dirTheme "$LitestepDir$themes\glaze\"; Added by LSTS
include "$dirTheme$$rcStep$" ; Added by LSTS

where dirTheme might be different according to the theme you used (in my case the excellent Glaze from DrWorm).

Weirdly enough it seemed to work fine after a re-boot but thanks for the advice anyhow. Cheers

Sometimes themes just don't start up when they should. I don't know why. When this happens I use ctrl+alt+f1 to switch to the simplicity theme (which always works) then try switching back to the other theme again. If this doesn't work I quit LS and start it up again.
