OTS ???? Thread last updated on 2003-06-27 11:04:47

Day 4 of my Litestep experience.
Currently using AmigaHLE v1.0. This and Blue Ice are the only ones that have worked thus far.
Some I have installed (just zipped them into Themes) come up on LSTS as a blank with N/A inscribed.(Secret Corn People for example).
Last night one theme (????)I switched to came up as a blank desktop.Crash-course in DOS as I had to re-install Windows
from command prompt. Not bitching about it,though. I enjoy the challenge.
Using Omar installer on Win98.
Perhaps a more user-friendly LSTS and LSCP would help for newbie Shell hackers such as myself; who have no idea what OTS is.

well, too late now, but all the problems you've had with those themes were (probably) fixable. as well as the one that came up as a blank desktop. next time, just hit ctrl+alt+f1, which should bring up the litestep "oh sh!t" menu. ;) you can then go the litestep control panel, which will let you choose a different theme. now for the blank desktop problem itself, go here and follow my instructions (next time you have the problem): http://www.litestep.net/index.php?section=4&action=view&catId=2&id=1218. and, when lsts brings up the "n/a" image instead of a screenshot, that usually just means that the author didn't include a screenshot, or lsts is looking for the wrong file (ie. looking for screen.png, when it's actually screen.bmp). hope this helps next time!

You know...all these people that reinstall windows...I used to feel bad for them...so I put it in the docs to NEVER reinstall windows over LS and nobody listened...now I feel that they got what they deserved.

true, true. however, it's our sacred duty as more experienced litestep users to help them. and, of course, pick on them mercilessly for being a user after eventually beating it into their thick skulls to READ THE DOCS. ;)

Maybe some sort of shell-switcher should be incorporated into the OTS installer...that way people could just reboot and choose to go into Windows, then get it sorted out.

Gad...how many posts have we read where someone is talking about the blank screen....blah...blah...LSTS....reinstall...whatever....? It's ridiculous.

cas, I've posted fixes/solutions for the same problem AT LEAST 5 times in the last 1-2 weeks. it's getting insane. people must be getting either lazier, or dumber. now, I've been trying to be helpful and upbeat, but they're beating me down with their ignorance. :(

I think you've been doing a great job, deuce...hang in there!

Well, I think some people are just a tad too impatient to read anything before they install...you can get away with that with most programs--not LS, unfortunately. heh!

yeah, good point. the only manuals I've ever read are for games. and I haven't even read too many of THOSE. ;)

This is why i dislike OTS. It makes people think LiteStep is easy and all they have to do is point and click. People who are not willing to configure their system by themselves should NOT be diving headlong into litestep.

It's not the fault of OTS. OTS is just a standard. There are a lot of standards that aren't simple. For instance, electrical wiring. Sure, it's not that hard, but you can still electrocute yourself if you're stupid. Same thing with Litestep. It's not that hard, but if you're stupid, you're going to get yourself in trouble.

nice example (and true btw) ;)
