Problem: I've tried to install Litestep on my XP laptop and no matter what I do or try it refuses to work. I have tried as a user and as administrator, using the installer and hands on through the registry. Every time I start it up I get a can't "run a DLL as an app".

Displayed information is as follows:
AppName:rundll32.exe
AppvVer: 5.1.2600.0
ModName: Unknown
ModVer: 0.0.0.0
Offset: 1000874c

I then get a message re: "Softmodem Messaging Applet"
Displayed information is as follows:
AppName:ltmmsg.exe
AppvVer: 3.1.97.0
ModName: mfc42.dll
ModVer: 6.0.8665.0
Offset: 00001c65

LS runs for a while then crashes and it's ctrl/alt/del time.

Laptop is IBM Thinkpad R31 1.13 Ghz, 384MB ram, XP Home edition (Windows NT 5.1 build 2600)

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,
Dave

the very same happens to me...
I got an IBM T40, and LS crashes no matter which build, due to mfc42.dll.

Some other apps crash too because of that, but not when run under explorer or sharpE...

i have many different version of mfc42 but I dont want to replace it in windows/system, I dont want to make my system unstable for a shell...

If you read the second error message there it says that it is a problem with the Lucent Software Modem Drivers. Try updating your modem drivers with IBM and see if that fixes it.

The mystery deepens.

I had another crack at it tonight. I had the same result at the start, ctrl/alt/del then launched LSTS from Windows task manager command line. I decided to see what trying to load different themes would do thru LSTS and, for some reason, (omar)Chaos works without a problem. I can then switch to another theme and it works! If I try to start with Chaos loaded as default it eats the files and I have to reinstall it. I still get the run as an app error message but LS doesn't crash after all is said and done. Beats me as to why but it seems to work. I have also disabled the modem since I connect thru the network card when I do plug it in so that may help too.

It's a pain in the ass to boot up or restart but after 2, 3 or 4 tries I eventually have LS on my laptop.

Thanks guys for the help. I'd still like to resolve this problem but I can live with it for now. At least until I reformat and pitch XP for Win2K...

Cheers,
Dave

SOLVED!
The cause is the battery thingie on the taskbar. It works with Explorer, but crashes LS or BBox. So I set the battery thingie not to show up on the taskbar and voila. Done.

using LS without a problem now.

WOOOHOOOOOO!

Thanks Liberte, you ROCK!

I just built my own little battery meter using LSpower. I'll be including it in my next update but I can send it to you e-mail if you like. Drop me a line at unred@telus.net.

Cheers!
