The second part is due to a bad theme, or, depending on how you look at it, themes that don't like being switched. Most themes can be easily switched, some error at you if you don't kill LS and the start it manually.
Revert to default theme...in the utilities fodler there is a LSThemeInstaller program. Run it and go to settings.
